Pfizer Inc. has been fined $2.2bn for its role in developing a Viagra-like treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The drug, which treats erectile dysfunction in men, will be subject to a $100m fine and will be available to patients via the Pfizer website under the name "Viagra", said a Pfizer spokesman.
Pfizer's impotence drug, called Revatio, was first developed in 1998 and the first medicine developed to treat it in 1998, the company said.
Under the terms of a $100m fine, Pfizer will pay $500,000 to resolve claims that the company has been trying to improve the quality of its medicines since 2011.
However, the company is still facing problems with the price of its Viagra. The company is also under investigation by British drug regulators for failing to warn the public about the drug.
The investigation has been continuing since at least March 2015.
Pfizer was the first pharmaceutical company to announce the drug's approval in the United States for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. In May 2016, it announced that it had received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, the most serious of which is the heart attack.
Pfizer said that Revatio is effective in treating erectile dysfunction in men with a 50-milligram dose of the drug. The drug has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the general population, but there has been no mention in the official documents of how the drug should be used in men who have had heart attacks or stroke or a heart attack.
